North Hastings District Hospital Auxiliary has launched our 2016 campaign. To reflect our hospital’s need for the following cardiac related equipment all funds raised will go towards the purchase of a Heartstart MRX, Defibrillator and various other components.

Starting June 25 – July 3, Pepins No Frills will again be providing a venue for our barbecue and Rounding up all grocery purchases at the cash which will go to the Hospital.

The summer continues with the Moose FM Radiothon, August 12-13, barbecue and breakfast.

September brings back the Tim Horton’s Smile Cookie.  From September 12 – 18 watch for the Auxiliary members’ smiling faces to accompany those cookies.  Even if you don’t eat sweets, buy some for a friend and of course, donations are gladly accepted.

Rounding off the year will be the second Annual Festival of Trees, December 3 – 10.  More trees, more variety, wine and cheese and entertainment!

New last year, and hot off the press for this season, Foodland raffle tickets are available while they last.  Draw December 9th at the Wine and Cheese.  Gift cards for Sobey’s, Foodland or Freshco, valued at $1000, $500, and $250  couldn't be more welcome at that time of year. Look out for us at Wheels, Water and Wings, New to You, the Corner Café or speak to an Auxiliary member.

Time to get your volunteering diary out and help fill all the spots to get the campaign up and running!

Volunteer Week – come to the picnic!

Get ahead of the spring season

Come to our picnic at the Corner Café

Given the rotten weather we have not been enjoying up to this point, we are hoping for better things and celebrating in advance of the daffodils! Wear something summery and come prepared for great food, great company and great fun. You can even bring your (grandchildren's) Teddy if you like!

October 21st, 2015 was the occasion of our 30th Anniversary celebration dinner. And what a celebration it was!

The Faraday Community Centre was fairly bursting its bricks with happy Auxiliary members and their spouses, partners and friends, many of whom were sporting hats "Casablanca"-style in keeping with our "Here's Looking At You" fund-raising theme. First we enjoyed a wonderful meal, followed by a real musical treat from the ladies of Camaraderie. There were door prizes and a silent auction too

The high spot of the evening, however, was the annoucement by our President Debbie Speck that not only had our fund-raising goal for the year had been met, our fund-raising goal for 2015 AND 2016 was fulfilled. A whopping $100,000 cheque was presented by Auxiliary President Debbie Speck to Kim Bishop, Chair of the North Hastings Fund Development Committee for the purchase of a portable ultra-sound machine, a portable X-ray machine and a blood analyser for the Hospital.

The people of Bancroft, visitors and cottagers too, have always risen to the occasion on the behalf of the Hospital and the Auxiliary wants to thank everyone for this year’s response. Our hospital is a very important asset to our community and we all appreciate how fortunate we are to have it. Thank you SO much everyone!

So let us all pat ourselves on the back. Well done, the Auxiliary! But more than that, well done to everyone who donated. Thank you, Bancroft! This is a generous and warm-hearted community.

We are 30 years old!

Happy Anniversary to our North Hastings District Hospital Auxiliary!

It was back in 1985 when a band of like-minded people decided to establish the Auxiliary to assist the hospital in meeting the needs of its patients. Since then members have been giving their all in many different ways. We are so proud to mention that we still have one active member from these early days.

Bentley_mona2Meet Mona Bentley

Mona has been with us since Day One and is still an active volunteer. Mona has garnered many awards over the last 30 years in recognition of her tireless efforts – greatly deserved!

Of course volunteers have come and volunteers have gone but it is worth noting that our membership now stands at over 100 and over the years volunteers have provided almost a quarter of a million hours of service on the behalf of the hospital.

From small beginnings, our locations have changed and improved. New To You (once the Op Shop) moved from its chilly original location outdoors (!) on Sherbourne Street to a more glamorous and cosier location on Flint Street in 2004 and in 2009 to its present location on Hastings Street, when the Auxiliary bought the building. Drop by and check out the selection of good quality clothing for women and men. The Corner Café came into being in 2003 and although no-one at that time had an idea of how to run a café, the volunteers muddled through making it the pleasant, successful and efficient venue that it now is. Don’t forget – it’s a great place to meet your friends for a cup of coffee or a light lunch. You can even buy a book for a buck, sit on a comfy chair and have a read.

Our fund-raising activities began modestly of course and raised $7,000 for the hospital in the first year. By 2014 the figure had soared to over $50,000. Not bad going, eh? Over our 30 years of operation we have funded many essential purchases including a zone air bed, vital signs monitors, wheelchairs, a blood coagulation machine and so many more. We also made a donation of $50,000 to the Dialysis Clinic in 2004.

This year we have raised the stakes and taken on a two year commitment. We are determined that we will raise $100,000 over the next two years with our “Here’s Looking At You” campaign to purchase

  • an emergency department Blood Chemistry Machine
  • a portable emergency Ultra-sound Machine
  • a portable X-ray Machine

So you are going to be seeing us all over town! Say “Howdy” at No Frills for the Round-up (June 27th – July 5th). See us and hear us during the Radiothon July 17th-18th. Maybe drop by for lunch at the BBQs. Raffle tickets with generous prizes of groceries vouchers from Foodland will be available just about everywhere. And in early fall it will be time for the Smile Cookie Campaign in conjunction with Tim Horton’s.

We’d like to thank all those in the community for their support over the years and hopefully in the future. We’ll be there – and we always welcome new volunteers!
